A Navy veteran-led operating company with a crew on the ground in coastal North Carolina year-round. Forestry mulching and land clearing, done by people who live in and care about the place they work.
I grew up a military kid, moving every couple of years until I joined the Navy out of high school. I served twelve years and made it to E-6 before transitioning out and heading to New York City to work as an engineer in tech. North Carolina first entered the picture when I came to Durham to finish my MBA at Duke on the GI Bill — two years on Tobacco Road taught me the Carolinas were a place I'd be coming back to.
Today our family splits time between New England and coastal North Carolina. Tarheel Brushworks is the local operation we built to do real work along the southern coast — staffed by a crew that lives and works here year-round, equipped to handle the things coastal NC land actually throws at you: kudzu, hurricane debris, sandy soils, wetland buffers, CAMA permits, and the City of Wilmington tree ordinance. We're not parachuting in. We're a permanent fixture in this market.
What this means for you: when you hire Tarheel Brushworks, you're hiring an operator who takes coastal NC land seriously. We know live oak from Chinese tallow. We know the difference between an inland fishing buffer and an estuarine shoreline AEC. We know what the Wilmington tree ordinance fines look like, and we get the right permits before we cut. We're not weekend operators with a mulcher and a Facebook page. We're a real operating company — local crew, maintenance program, insurance, payroll, the works — focused on doing premium land work for premium properties along the southern coast.
We carry the values we earned in uniform into every project we run — and we hold ourselves to a five-star service standard from the first phone call to the finished property.
Tell the truth. Quote honestly. Do what you said you would do. We name what's included, what's not, and what could go wrong before we ever touch a tree. If we're the wrong fit for your project, we'll tell you that too.
Take responsibility when it counts. Heavy equipment on someone else's land has consequences. We make the hard call when conditions change, we own our mistakes when we make them, and we have the difficult conversation rather than dodge it.
Finish what you start. Show up when you said. Stay until the work is right. We don't disappear mid-project, we don't reschedule for higher-paying jobs, and we don't leave a property until the job is done to standard.
Treat every customer like our reputation depends on them — because it does. Clear communication, on-time arrival, neat work, photo documentation of the finished job, and a follow-up after the dust settles. That's the bar we hold ourselves to on every project.
Tarheel Brushworks is a federally certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business — qualified for federal, state, and municipal contracting opportunities under SDVOSB set-aside programs.
Commercial general liability coverage, full equipment insurance, and workers' compensation for our crew. Certificates of insurance available on request before any job starts.
Our operators are trained on tracked mulching equipment and bring real experience working the terrain coastal North Carolina properties throw at you. We understand the sandy coastal soils, the CAMA setbacks, the wetland complexity, and the local invasive species — kudzu, Chinese privet, Chinese tallow — that make this region's land work demanding.
